  • History's Business Lesson: Cornelius Vanderbilt

I like to read about business people who lived a generation(s) ago.  I believe I can take some inspiration from how titans of yesteryear became wealthy.

I read about Cornelius Vanderbilt.  In his lifetime, he rose from fairly humble beginnings.  His father had a ferry service.  As the story goes, he borrowed some money from his father and began his own ferry service at the age of 16.  His deal with his father required him to share half his profits.  While still operating a ferry service, Mr. Vanderbilt captained another ship for a man named Aaron Ogden.  By working for Mr. Ogden, the young Vanderbilt learned much about shipping (yes knowledge is power).  Well, the main part of the story for me is Mr. Vanderbilt started his climb to fortune through humble means and associating himself with smart people.  If you consider his wealth (at his death) in today's dollars, he would have been worth around 147 billion dollars.

So, don't be afraid to start a business even if you are currently working.  It just might be the means to provide for generations of your family to come.
