    There was a message on my answering machine.  I was out most of the day (it couldn't be helped) and returned the call late in the afternoon.  Unfortunately, that was enough time for the potential client and I learned she had found another tax professional in the interim.
     
    I've been on the windfall side of that kind of situation in the past and it stings a bit to think that I could have somehow picked up a client had I been at the office.
     
    Well, I suppose you can't win them all but you can take steps to ensure that you don't let those "gift" opportunities slip through your fingers.
