    Whether in corporate America or operating your own business, there are definite ways to harm your ability to get ahead.
     
    In college/university, they teach you technical aspects of performing a job.  The problem is the soft skills that you must master if you are to avoid career catastrophe.  Your tone of voice, your body language, your attire all go into what others see.  While in corporate America I learned those things the hard way.  
     
    Books, clubs and workshops teach you what really should have been covered in college.  So much of this "other stuff" is missing from formal education.  It's a shame so many of us have to learn the hard way.
