  • How long to keep tax records

In the beginning your parents quite possibly prepared your federal tax return for you while you were still in school.  Maybe you flipped burgers trying to make some extra spending money and your folks assisted to keep you in tax compliance.  Now it's been a few years and you either pay for someone to complete the return or do it yourself.  Either way, one of the bigger concerns taxpayers have is how long to keep the copy of the return and the supporting documents.

Well, it depends.   Your answer may be contained on my website (www.richardjgarciacpa.com).  Look under the tab marked tax center and select the choice for record retention guide.  Use the information there as a guide for you to consider.  Print it out and keep it as a reference.  The IRS website (www.irs.gov) also contains the same information should you wish to visit their website.  There is a link from my website. If you select the internet links tab then government links and finally select Internal Revenue Service.
