Be a participantFor many years, I waited for something to come to me. Perhaps it was shyness or the fear of nonacceptance by others. I don't really know why but thanks to a famous quote spoken by John. F. Kennedy, I have changed. The quote? "Ask not what your country can do for you-ask what you can do for your country".
So it took me ages before that quote finally meant something to me. I waited for opportunities to come my way. I waited for my place of worship to give me something when I sat in the pew. I waited to be served.
Things finally changed one day when I began looking at myself from the outside in. I didn't volunteer, I wasn't really involved in anything for others and I wasn't satisfied with my life. I decided I didn't want to be that person anymore. Perhaps the way it works to reach contentment is to do for others without the expectation of getting anything in return. I try to follow that path now and from time to time people will ask what I get in return. My answer: Nothing and everything.
For you, I hope you perform one selfless act and inspire one other person to do the same. In that way, you will make the world around you a little bit better. You will have made a difference.
Me? I now volunteer my time a couple of times a year to direct chess tournaments for elementary aged kids at my children's former school. The last one had over 100 kids participating. I've also organized a couple of weekly bicycle rides along different city routes to bring others together and I sing each Sunday with my Church choir. Do you know something else? I am content.
