How to keep customers

So many books and articles on the subject of retaining customers.  What's a major secret?  Not really so much a secret as a golden rule.  Let them know you appreciate their business.

Once customers sense that you aren't really interested in them, it's only a matter of time before they move on.

 There's a reason why you started your own business (independence, more money, flexibility).  Your customers provide you the means to feed your family.  How important does that make them?
