Learning doesn't end after formal education
I spent the morning at a conference yesterday. I really didn't have the time to spare but I don't want to find myself working with an abacus because I failed to be exposed to the newest technologies. The conference was on cloud computing and yes, I did learn quite a few new tidbits on the subject matter.
While in school as a young man, I remember one of my biggest fears was to get older and suddenly realize I'd become "set in my ways". Well, that's still one of my biggest fears. What if I don't remain at or near the cutting edge with technology? Since I don't have a monopoly on my market then I could be vulnerable to losing ground to my competitors.
So, my solution is to attend conferences like the one mentioned and read, read, read all I can to incorporate those newest things that make my job easier and the product to my clients more valuable.
There was an episode on the old TV show the Twilight Zone a long while back. In it, the fellow said it was o.k. to have an old body but work to have a young mind. I think that could be a good thing to strive for.
