Merry Christmas and a joyous holiday seasonWhy do I wake up so early? Last night, I sang in the choir at midnight mass. This morning, I'm up before the Sun is out for an early bicycle ride. The city is still largely asleep.
I know the weather will be cold. It won't matter because I need the ride. Pedaling while my body shivers for warmth. At first, muscles will be tight. Later, my body will become attuned with a constant pedaling motion while fingers switch gears seemingly on their own accord. The sites will pass slowly by. Smells will be in the air, mostly downtown as grills, ovens and stoves are preparing to serve their patrons.
Walkers, joggers and cyclists will pass each other on the roads. A gentle nod toward each other like a brotherhood of sorts. We each crave the outdoors in our own way. Some will not acknowledge, perhaps thinking they are elite athletes much to important for even the briefest of socializing with weekend warriors. No matter. This ride is a fix of sorts just for me.
Today's ride will allow for reflection of another Merry Christmas and holiday season reached. Home I will return to unwrap gifts nestled under the Christmas tree. Life is good.
Thank you God.
