    • How to choose a tax return preparer

    Choosing a tax return preparer can be a mixed bag.  A business may do an excellent job with advertising their services but a substandard job with the return.  What are some ways you can increase your chances of selecting a competent preparer?  Well, here's a couple of things to ask:

    -  What are your qualifications?  Are you a CPA or Enrolled Agent or a Registered Tax Return Preparer?

    -  Do you have any disciplinary actions against you with the State Board of Accountancy or IRS Office of Enrollment for enrolled agents?

    -  How many returns do you prepare each year and how many tax seasons have you been preparing tax returns?

    -  Do you provide electronic filing?

    While these are just a few questions to ask, you should feel comfortable with the professional you will be dealing with.  If you feel uneasy, trust your instincts and keep searching for another tax professional.
